NXT Takeover: Philadelphia Review

Undisputed Era (c) defeated the Authors of Pain to retain the NXT Tag Team Championship

When teams face off against the Authors of Pain, you know that they are going to be getting beat down for most of the match. That was the case again here as AOP dominated most of this match only for the Undisputed Era to pull one out of the last minute. It was a good match overall and the result made sense as well as the team of Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly look like one of the top tier teams in the division.

Velveteen Dream defeated Kassius Ohno

The beginning of this match was like a boxing match as these two were exchanging blow for blow to see who could get the upper hand to start. Then, after a while, the moves started to play a factor in this match. Dream ended up winning this match after hitting an elbow drop from the top rope. Much needed win for Dream as he shows that he is one of the brightest starts going forward for NXT.

Ember Moon (c) defeated Shayna Baszler

Most of this match was focused on Ember Moon and her arm because she took a nasty bump where it got stepped on and went in a different direction. This focused mostly on Moon being the face in peril and being able to overcome it. It made for a good story for during this match and to pull out a rollup to win the match was a good way to end it. Baszler then attacked Moon after the match as well so it looks like this rivalry is just beginning.

Aleister Black defeated Adam Cole in an Extreme Rules Match

When you knew that this was going to be an extreme rules match, you knew there was going to be carnage. This definitely was the case as these two guys beat the heck out of each other. Tables, chairs, kendo sticks, etc. were all used. Interference played a factor too as the Undisputed Era interfered on behalf on Cole and then Sanity helped Black by interfering on his behalf. Black ended up winning after hitting his Black Mass kick and this was one of the more entertaining matches of the night.

Andrade “Cien” Almas (c) defeated Johnny Gargano to retain the NXT Championship

This was the match of the night. These two put on a match for over 30 minutes and it was great from start to finish. Strikes, moves, and close pin falls is what made this match so epic and execution of these also played a big factor. Along with that, they even played into the match of Gargano’s wife, recently signed NXT superstar Candice LeRae attacking Zelina Vega to help out her husband because Vega kept interfering in the match. These two have fought three times in the past year, and they do not disappoint ever.

Overall, this was a pretty good show. The Cole vs. Black and the NXT championship match were definitely the highlights of the show. It’ll be interesting to see where which rivalries continue and which ones decide to go down a different road. Either way, NXT never seems to disappoint when it comes to their shows and this was another prime example about it.
