Chael “The American Gangster” Sonnen and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson  stepped into the octagon in the opening fight of the Bellator MMA World Grand Prix eight-man heavyweight tournament but Sonnen walked out victorious when it was all said and done.

Sonnen and Jackson both knew that Sonnen’s strategy was to take Rampage to the ground to negate Jackson’s size and strength and Sonnen was able to do so several times throughout the fight.

Jackson made a bet that he would pay Sonnen $10,000 for every takedown. Well, it’s time for him to pay up.

Sonnen (30-15-1) defeated Jackson (37-13-0) via unanimous decision to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator MMA World Grand Prix. All three judges scored the fight 29-28.

Sonnen moves on to face the winner of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir.

“I’ve met 6,000,000 men, and none of them are as tough as Chael Sonnen,” said Sonnen as he was showered with boos from the crowd.

And about that check?

“I will tell you this: I will not cash his check,” Sonnen said. “I do expect him to hand me it. But what I do with it is my business. But I’ll tell you what, I will not cash that check.”
