WWE Issues Statement On Jinder Mahal’s Controversial SmackDown Promo

WWE Champion Jinder Mahal cut a controversial promo on this week’s edition of ‘SmackDown Live’ that has a lot of people upset.

Mahal’s promo mocked Shinsuke Nakamura’s Japenese heritage and culture going as far as to mock Nakamura saying  “you always rook the same” whether Nakamura is happy or angry, comparing him to Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid.

Mahal also mentioned that Japanese people feast on cats and dolphins in his rant.

The promo caused a backlash chant from the crowd in attendance who chanted “that’s too far” and backlash flew in all over social media.

One response receiving a lot of attention is an article in the Washington Post penned by Marissa Payne who took WWE to task over the scripted segment.

A WWE spokesperson issued the follwing statement to the Washington Post about Mahal’s promo:

“Just like many other TV shows or movies, WWE creates programming with fictional personalities that cover real world issues and sensitive subjects.

As a producer of such TV shows, WWE Corporate is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans.”
