Paulie Malignaggi has decided to step down as the sparring partner for UFC star Connor McGregor and the retired boxer says that he will likely fly home after photos surfaced on Thursday appearing to show McGregor in a favorable light during Tuesday’s 12-round session.

“I wanted to be part of this event, but I didn’t want to become the story, and that’s what this has turned into,” Malignaggi told ESPN.

“I won’t release any information about his game plan or what he’s working on — I wouldn’t do that. But this has become a fiasco. It’s a circus.

“And I do want that sparring video released. The UFC’s PI definitely has that video. I understand it can’t come out now, but Conor, if you have any balls, release what really happened.”

On Friday someone on Twitter suggested that the fallout and public construing of images to show Malignaggi in a negative light during sparring was perhaps part of “the plan”.

Malignanggi seemed to agree with the theory.

Malignaggi also took to Twitter on Thursday night, challenging McGregor to release footage of the entire contest.

Malignaggi also posted this message on social media.
